Longman Awards

I instigated the Longman Awards in 2008 to recognise individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the community through volunteering.

The Awards are timed each year to coincide with National Volunteer Week and each year I invite community organisations acrross Longman, from Deception Bay and Kallangur to Bribie Island and Woodford, to nominate someone who has made an outstanding contribution through volunteering.

Volunteers and community organisations play a vital role - they turn a location into a community and participate in an extraordinary range of activities. From sporting and recreational clubs to health and welfare organisations, heritage and environmental bodies the work they do in our local area is breathtaking.

I hope these Awards encourage more people to get involved in volunteering. Volunteering benefits the volunteer as well as the community through friendships, camaraderie, a sense of purpose and achievement.

But mostly, the work of a volunteer benefits the community and on behalf of the people of Longman I want to thank the 2009 and 2010 recipients. I also want to thank the countless volunteers who every day contribute to our community.
