Open letter to the community and volunteer organisations of Longman
Friday 5 December is the United Nations Day of the Volunteer and I know community organisations like yours would not exist without the time, expertise and enthusiasm of volunteers.
Earlier this year the Rudd Labor Government recognised the important role played by community organisations and volunteers and the costs they incur by introducing the $21 million Volunteers Grants Program.
At a local level, I want to recognise the role of volunteers and the importance of community organisations within my electorate.
To this end, I am announcing the opening of nominations for the inaugural “Longman Volunteer Awards”.
I’m asking each community organisation within my electorate to nominate one person who has made an outstanding contribution throughout 2008 who will then receive a “Longman Volunteer Award”. Each year there will be a limit of one recipient per community organisation.
Nominations will close on Friday 27 March 2009 and the Awards will be presented at a Community Event during Volunteers Week in May.
I also want to provide a showcase for community groups to exhibit their activities and to encourage more local people to volunteer their time and talents in the wide range of organisations within our community. I propose holding the Longman Community Group Expo during Volunteers Week in May 2009.
I hope that your organisation will help me in celebrating the role of volunteers in all aspects of our community life by putting forward a nomination for the Inaugural “Longman Volunteers Awards” and by taking part in the Longman Community Group Expo.
Please find enclosed a Nomination Form for the “Longman Volunteer Awards”. I will contact you again in the New Year with further details about the Community Event and Community Group Expo to be held during Volunteers Week in May 2009.
